Key Highlights and New Entrants

The 2026 rankings bring several positive indicators for Pakistan’s education sector. Among the notable achievements is the first-time inclusion of certain private institutions, which highlights their rapid expansion and focus on international metrics.

The rankings categorize institutions based on their performance across various weighted indicators:

  1. Teaching (Learning Environment)
  2. Research Environment (Volume, Income, Reputation)
  3. Research Quality (Citation Impact, Research Strength, Research Excellence)
  4. Industry (Income and Patents)
  5. International Outlook (Staff, Students, Co-authorship)

One of the significant successes this year is the performance of Iqra University, which earned a spot in the 801–1000 band. An analyst speaking to a local news outlet commented on the institution’s achievement.

“Iqra University has been ranked 10th among Pakistani universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, released today. Ranked for the first time, the university has performed commendably across all indicators and has also secured a position among the top 10 Pakistani institutions in the areas of Research Quality and International Outlook, underscoring its strong research impact and expanding global engagement,” a local source reported.

This surge in ranked institutions indicates that national universities are successfully aligning their academic and research goals with rigorous international benchmarks. The continuous push by the HEC for institutions to submit data and participate in global rankings is yielding tangible results, boosting Pakistan’s profile in higher education worldwide.
