Oxford Introduces New O-Level Syllabus for Pakistani Students

OxfordAQA, an international examination board, has introduced three updated and highly contextualized subject specifications for Pakistani students pursuing the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) or O-Level examinations. The move, announced in Karachi, aims to ensure local learners receive education relevant to national identity while preparing them for global standards.

The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with Oxford University Press Pakistan (OUP Pakistan), focuses on core mandatory subjects central to the national curriculum.

Key Mandatory Subjects Updated

The newly developed syllabi cover the following three subjects, featuring a clear assessment structure designed to enhance critical thinking, analytical skills, and overall exam readiness:

  1. Islamiyat
  2. Urdu
  3. Pakistan Studies

The curriculum content is culturally relevant, using clear language and framing local contexts within the broader framework of global developments and Pakistan’s role internationally. The course material offers detailed insights into the country’s history, geography, Islamic faith and traditions, and the richness of the Urdu language and literature.

Leadership Commends Initiative

Speaking at the launch event, officials from both OxfordAQA and OUP Pakistan emphasized the significance of linking international qualification standards with local educational needs.

Arshad Saeed Husain, Managing Director of Oxford University Press Pakistan, highlighted the board’s commitment to educational fairness and quality. He stated, as cited by Dawn newspaper:

“OxfordAQA stands for fairness, transparency and quality education, empowering learners to succeed on the world stage.”

Salma Adil, Director of OxfordAQA Pakistan, commented on the balance between rigorous academics and real world application. She elaborated on the purpose of the initiative:

“OxfordAQA combines academic integrity with practical relevance. Our aim is to ensure that students are not only well-prepared for examinations but are also equipped with skills and understanding they need to thrive in a global context.”

New Textbooks Introduced

Accompanying the new syllabi, OUP Pakistan introduced textbooks designed specifically to align with the revised curriculum requirements. The authors of the textbooks also addressed the event.

The subject authors are:

  • Islamiyat: Nighat Gaya Bajwa
  • Urdu: Dr. Faizuddin Ahmed
  • Pakistan Studies: Nigel Smith

This concerted effort marks a major step in localizing international examinations, ensuring Pakistani students are equipped with a strong, contextual foundation for future academic and professional pursuits.
